The Historical Evolution of Lighting
July 28, 2018

The advent of reliable, energy efficient lighting in everywhere continues to play a major part in the modern way of life. When you think about lighting, it’s important to think of three different things: the fuel source, the luminaire, and the technology used to produce visible light. Let’s have a quick look.

Natural Light

The most important source of light is the sun and perhaps the most underappreciated use of this abundant light is architecture designed to take advantage of it.

 Torches

One of the most early and most primitive ways of illumination was a torch. Ancient Romans invented and used that kind of torch. Torches were often put into sconces to serve as fixed lightning in crypts and castles.  Torch was used as a symbol of hope, and enlightenment.

Candles

One of the oldest light sources, candle did not change much throughout the history. It is basically a mass of wax or some other fuel through which is embedded wick which, when lit, produces light. They are used for illumination and sometimes for heating.

Oil Lamps

Oil lamps are devices for making artificial light that use any sort of oil as a fuel. They first appeared some 70.000 BC and were made out of convenient nonflammable found object such are shells and hollow rocks.

 Gas Lamps

Gas lighting was developed in England in 1790 and introduced to the United States shortly thereafter by William Murdoch. Different types of gas have been used over the years to include methane, acetylene, butane, propane, hydrogen, and natural gas.

Electric lamps

The first electric light was created by Englishman Humphry Davey.  He took a filament, made from platinum strip, and connected it to a battery, the biggest one in the world at the time and in 1802 made first prototype of an incandescent lamp. Electric current ran through platinum filament, heated it and filament started emitting light.

Flashlight

In 1899, English inventor David Misell invented the first flashlight. It had three D batteries placed in a tube that acted as a handle of the device. Batteries powered a small incandescent electric light bulb and a simple contact switch turned light on and off. They were called “flash” lights.
