LEDS And Health Problems
December 8, 2018

LEDs are considered to be one of most energy-efficient bulbs available in the market. Nowadays many of us are revamping our lighting with LED lights. A normal LED has a very long lifespan when compared with normal incandescent and fluorescent lamps. This makes many us attracted towards LED lightings. Recently many folks are reporting LEDs are harmful to health and it can cause blindness. In this article, we are going to check the authentication of such arguments.

What is LED?

We know that LEDs are basically working on light-emitting circuitry. Now the question arises what LED circuitry is? In LEDs, light emitting diode plays an important role. The light emitting diode is a p-n junction diode that emits lights when activated by a voltage. When compared with other lamps LEDs are more efficient in converting energy into lights. There are different types of LEDs based on the color of light it emits. They are red. green, blue and white.

LEDS AND Health problems

Red LEDs are made with aluminum gallium arsenide which is said to be toxic in concentrated amounts. This substance can create acute and chronic toxicity of the lung, reproductive organs, and kidney. The lead content in LEDs can also cause health issues. So one should give extreme care when dealing with broken LED lamps.

Another category is Blue LEDs. Long exposure of Blue Lights can cause macular degeneration. Blue rays can easily affect the retina and weaken your eyesight.

And most commonly used LEDs are White LEDs.White LEDs contain heavy metals like nickel and copper. Direct exposure to nickel can cause allergic reactions. Along with that, some nickel compounds can cause cancer in humans and unfortunately, metallic nickel belongs to this category. This also makes LEDs dangerous. Direct contact with these hazardous materials can risk your health. But the fact noticeable is all these components are embedded inside the lamp. You can minimize the side effects of the LEDs by handling it with extreme care. You should avoid any kind encounter with these hazardous materials inside LEDs.

Another problem said about LEDs are they can cause blindness. It is not completely true. Lights with high intensities can affect retina adversely. Similarly light from the larger and brighter LED source can affect your retina and in turn, cause blindness. This problem can be solved by avoiding long staring towards LED lights.

From all these quiet understandable that LEDs become harmful depending upon how we handle with it. Otherwise, it’s the best lighting source we can use in our home.
